While they were upfront about the wait (albeit a bit off on the exact length) I do think this business model needs tweaking. They seem to operate on a business model where you pay upfront, and then they order the parts and then build them. They had a warning that it would take 4-6 to arrive. How much of this is marketing and how much is reality is difficult to suss out, but I’m always pretty skeptical of such claims. The peacock itself references a favorite shirt of Duane’s that was given to him by Eric Clapton. The voice control is suggested to allow for emulation of the JBL D120 tone. Various claims to an unnamed designer having built some pedal for Duane Allman in 1971 and interviews with the band’s roadies and techs are put forth. It is marketed as “Fillmore East in a box”. The marketing of the pedal, and for that matter the entire company, is for Allman Brothers tone chasers. It’s a Georgia company (where I live) and I like supporting in-state companies when I can (except Greenchild Amps, I’ll never support them again). It was on sale when I bought it, down to the same price as the standard version. And then one review with a guy who seems to be, in some way, associated with the company (and who I think posts here as “DRRI”). A few reviews for the older versions (more on that later) and some reviews for the new standard version (Most notably Shane from In The Blues). There wasn’t a whole lot of info on it out there. when I had the euphoria on board, I kept subconsciously dialing it in to sound almost exactly like my Lightspeed.Įnter the Missing Link Audio Peacock Drive Germanium. Which may be unfair, because it might just be that a bright, transparent-ish mids, lead boost with a tiny amount of grit is the only thing that WILL give me that feeling. But nothing quite hit me with that same “this is EXACTLY what I’ve been after” feeling that the Lightspeed gave me. So far I’ve used and really liked: Wampler Euphoria, Greer SupaCobra, Keeley Red Dirt Germanium. I’ve had several things in this spot, and I’ve really liked a few of them a lot (and honestly should have just went with any one of them and moved on). And then to be able to stack with the Lightspeed for a huge lead tone. I also want a bit fatter tone to contrast with the Lightspeed. However, sometimes I want the increase in saturation and sustain, but without the same jump in volume. The Lightspeed is also set to be fairly bright to cut through the mix and make every wrong note jump off the fretboard with bright lights.
This is, however, associated with a pretty noticeable jump in volume as well. I then push it to medium crunch with the Lightspeed. I’ve got a Friedman Runt 20 and I love the character of its natural drive.
But I’ve been trying to exactly nail down my medium overdrive. So, my light overdrive/lead boost is, for the moment at least, locked in with the Lightspeed.
